Istria is Croatia’s largest peninsula, and it is known for attractive coastline, historical towns and gastronomy.
There are many differences between the inland and the coastal areas, but they are both appealing in their own way. The coasts of Istria (particularly the west coast) are characterized by fine beaches, numerous small islands in front of the coast and rich cultural and entertainment offer in towns.
The most attractive locations on the coast are:
- The town of Poreč. It is worldwide known for the Euphrasius Basilica dating back to the 6th century, which is enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The town of Rovinj, known for many theme-museums, rich history and exceptional art and entertainment offer
- Pula, the largest city in Istria, known for exceptionally valuable monuments from the Roman times (Amphitheatre, Arch of Sergians, the town door, the Temple of August…)
- Brijuni Islands, National Park of 16 islands, located in front of Pula
- The Lim Channel, an area under state protection for its nature beauty

Kvarner is geographically particularly diverse region, consisting of mountainous inland, narrow coastal strip with 4 Rivieras and many islands in the Bay of Kvarner.
This region has the longest tradition in tourism in Croatia, thanks to exquisite nature beauty, historical heritage and widely known healing characteristics of climate and vegetation.
In this region you’ll find:
- Krk, the largest Croatian island, known for historical town of Krk, remarkable medieval sacral heritage and rich history
- Islands of Cres, Lošinj i Rab which are significant for well preserved flora and fauna and picturesque beaches
- Numerous small islands, among which stand out the sandy island Susak and wooden Košljun
- The town of Opatija, the oldest Croatian tourist resort. In the past it was a favourite destination of nobilities and dignitaries because of its beauty and healing characteristics of the air and vegetation. Today it is an exclusive and elegant resort.
- The city Rijeka, which is the largest Croatian port, administrative centre of the Region and home of the world-famous Carnival
- The Rivieras of Opatija, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski and Rijeka
The list of marinas in Kvarner
The region of North Dalmatia comprises the Zadar hinterland (a lowland Ravni Kotari), coastal strip and numerous islands of the Zadar archipelago. This region is a favourite sailing ground, due to particularly indented coast, many islands and favourable winds. This is the regon with the largest concentration of marinas.
Especially attractive locations are:
- Zadar, a 3000 years old city, a centre of the region that preserves excuisite heritage dating back to Roman times
- Nin, a small town just north of Zadar, also know as the “Croatian Betlehem”; it is the oldest Croatian royal town and a member of the Walled Towns Friendship Circle
- Šibenik, a historical royal town, known for its cathedral (enlisted on UNESCO World Heritage List) and an excellent location next to the Kornati Islands (the most indented island group in Mediterranean) and carst hydrographical phenomena (Skradinski buk, islet Visovac and Roški waterfall)
- National parks Kornati Islands, Krka Waterfalls and Paklenica (on Velebit mountain); Nature Parks Telašćica and Vrana Lake
- Long and bare island Pag, known for its lace, cheese, inceadibly indented coast and nice beaches
- Islands of Pašman, Ugljan, Dugi Otok, Ist, Iž, Murter…

This region comprises wider Split area (Dalmatinska Zagora) and the islands in the Split archipelago.
Due to rich and exciting history, Middle Dalmatia is particularly diverse – the influence of Turkish conquests can be seen in the inland (centuries old game Alka in Sinj), and Mediterranen influences are recognizable in architecture, speech, diet and all other aspects of lifestyle on the islands.
- The city of Split, economical, cultural and administrative centre of the region; the city evolved from the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, and the remains of the Palace are protected by UNESCO as one of the best preserved Roman architectural structures in the world
- Trogir, a town near Split, connected to the island Čiovo by bridge; its entire old core is protected by UNESCO and it is know as the “town-museum”
- Salona, remains of the Antique town, which had been a capital of the Roman province Dalmatia before it was destroyed; today it’s an exceptionally valuable archaeological site
- The islands of Brač (the highest Croatian island), Hvar, Vis and others. They are all attractive tourist destinations due to nice beaches, leisure time offer, summer fiestas and fine winesThe Babić vineyards in the Primošten surroundings. The most valuable Croatian sort is grown on small surfaces which are separated by small stone walls on a steep ground. The vineyards are recognized as a World Monument of Culture
The list of marinas in central Dalmatia
South Dalmatia is a region that is almost completely oriented towards the sea.
Dubrovnik, a cultural pearl of Croatian Adriatic and Mediterranean is an administrative centre and the only larger town.
This region is known as an elegant and exclusive destination, attractive for its entertainment offer, historical heritage and landscape beauty.

- Dubrovnik, a Mediterranean pearl where liberty and democracy had always been highly appreciated. Today, Dubrovnik town core is protected by UNESCO, and the town is an elegant and mandatory stopping point for everyone visiting Mediterranean
- Elafiti Islands, a group of mostly uninhabited islands in front of Dubrovnik, particularly attractive for yachting and excursions
- The town of Korčula, on the island of the same name, is known for its regularly shaped layout, historical architecture and the knight’s game of Moreška
- Pelješac, a long and narrow peninsula, particularly diverse because of its shape; some of the finest Croatian wines come from Pelješac
- Mali Ston, a gastronome centre of the region and the town with the longest town walls in Europe; Veliki Ston, famous for salt production
- National Park island Mljet, and Nature Park Lastovo archipelago
